Jet-14 Class Plans for Return To Racing

The COVID-19 epidemic has led to the cancellation or postponement of regattas across the world.  As of late May many states now allow sailing, especially with family.  This has sparked discussion in the Jet-14 class about the prospects of cobbling together a racing schedule for the rest of the 2020 season.

The first regatta that most of us are wondering about is Nationals, originally planned for Mayfield Yacht Club in early August.  The class association is in close contact with MYC leadership about the event.  As New York has been at the epicenter of the crisis in the United States, state and MYC leadership are understandingly pessimistic that we will be able to have Nationals as scheduled.

Given this information, the Jet-14 class association is exploring alternatives for dates and places for our national championship, in case we are not able to race at MYC.  Members and other interested sailors are advised to stay tuned for updates, as the situation is fluid.  Other regattas originally scheduled are mostly in a “wait and see” pattern.  The popular NC Governor’s Cup Regatta has been cancelled, but other regattas later in the summer have not made decisions yet.

Check back with this site as more information is released.

Nationals Registration Open

Registration for the 2018 Jet-14 Nationals at Lake Norman Yacht Club in Mooresville, NC is now open.  You are encouraged to register and pay electronically through the regatta network website.  Paper registration forms will be mailed next week.  Forms and other information are available at the regatta network website or at jet14.com.

In Jet racing this past weekend, nine Jets reported for action for the 61st NC Governors Cup regatta at Kerr Lake, NC.  Tom Grace and Paula Pacheco (Lake Norman Yacht Club) won the four race series in light air.  Read the summary and full results at jet14.com.

There were two other Jet regattas – Bridget Ireland took down the seven boat Cleveland Race Week fleet with a pair of bullets.  Check back for a summary and results on the website soon.  Our New Jersey friends also raced in the Wren Regatta at Hunterdon – we hope to post those results as well.

The first regatta of the Jet-14 season gets underway this weekend near Asheville, NC.  Weather is forecast to be ideal with sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-upper 60s, and winds in the 5-15 kt range.  Lenny Wells (#1130) will look to defend his title against an expected fleet of 10 boats which includes past champion Tom Grace/Paula Pacheco (#717).

The local ABC affiliate, WLOS, ran a series of segments on the regatta, the local club, and the new youth sailing program.  You’ll find some nice video of last year’s SCC regatta in there.

Results will be posted next week – stay tuned!

Halloween Classic Moved to Oct. 7-8

Mohican Sailing Club has announced a change of date for their premier Jet-14 regatta.  The Halloween Classic will now be held Saturday-Sunday, October 7-8.  Please change your travel plans and let Marion know you’ll be there.

The Jet-14 class annual meeting was held at Edgewater Yacht Club during Nationals.  A report will be published soon.

June 17-18: Cleveland Race Week.  I just counted 12 Jets already registered for this one!  What a great way to preview this year’s Nationals venue.  Register online.

2017 Membership – Join Now!

Jetters,

Hard to believe it is almost March already.  Fleet 65 down here in NC is busy welcoming two new members, Curtis Boyd (#203) and Don Read (#951) into the fold and we’re looking forward to seeing them out there racing in 6th Southern Comfort Classic April 29-30.

You probably have received an email from our esteemed class secretary that membership for the 2017 season is now open.  The easiest thing to do is to navigate to the membership page on our class website (https://www.jet14.com/membership), fill out the online form, and pay with your credit card online.  Or, you can go “Marion” and print out the membership form, fill it out, and mail it in with your payment.  Either way, do it!  Your membership supports the class association in a number of important ways.  You also will be assured to receive 1 year of JetBlasts in your mailbox.

I’ve heard that the regatta schedule is almost ready to go – look for it in the mail soon along with an invitation to join the class if you haven’t already.  Check out the website for recent updates, including minor changes to the measurement specifications, a Southern Comfort Classic preview, and a digital copy of the latest JetBlasts newsletter.

That’s all for now.  See you on the water soon.

Chris

Jet Blasts Return

Happy New Year Jet-14 Nation!

By now I hope that you have all received and read last year’s Jet Blasts issue, our first in quite some time.  I’ve attached the issue to this note in case you haven’t seen it.  This is a great resource to have around at the club or to take with you to One Design regattas.  If you need more copies, please contact Secretary Tiffany Parker – I’m sure there are some extras that she can mail you.  Or, feel free to print out the attached pdf document.

Halloween Classic

A great time was had by all at the 2016 Halloween Classic.

Another successful Halloween Classic is in the books.  In case you missed the classic summary and results, they are posted on the class website here.

2017 Jet-14 Regattas

The 2017 regatta schedule will be taking shape over the next few weeks so stay tuned for that.  We do know that the Southern Comfort Classic in Asheville, NC will be April 29-30 – a little later this year, so the weather should be plenty warm.  We usually get 10 boats for this one but should have more this year as there’s now 7 boats at Asheville Sailing Club alone ready to go.  Send me a note if you have any questions!

I’m working on a new Jet Blasts issue as we speak.  Look for it in your mailbox by early February.  Have a great start to the new year!

Chris

Governor’s Cup / District III Results

Results are in from the District III Championships in NC– look for Cleveland Race Week results from the same weekend soon.

Next regatta on the schedule is the Independence Day event at Lake Norman Yacht Club.  Follow the link for information and registration.

Early registration for Nationals is underway – all of the information is available on the class website.

That’s it for now!

Mohican Chiefs Regatta

The Mohican Chiefs regatta just wrapped up this past weekend at Mohican Sailing Club.  There were 13 boats and plenty of stories to fill the newspapers, including a spinnaker fatality,  a Richard Simmons/Refrigerator Perry reference, and “Shao”.  Marion Zaugg and Anne Joudrey came out on top – you can read Marion’s classic summary and view the results here:

Upcoming Events

There are a number of Jet-14 events coming up this month.  The festivities start this weekend at West River Sailing Club in Galesville, MD as the Jets return for the Dave Irey Memorial Regatta.  West River is the former home of one of the older Jet-14 fleets and the site of the 2016 Nationals this year.  As of June 1 we have 6 boats officially registered from three states (NC, MD, and NJ), with a couple more expected.  Look for results and a recap on the Jet website later this month.

As the days continue to get longer into the middle of June, we will turn our attention to a couple of big events.  During the weekend of June 18-19, Cleveland Race Week returns and promises to bring fun big lake racing in the shadows of downtown Cleveland.  For those in the mid-Atlantic and southeast, another option that weekend is the Governor’s Cup regatta on Kerr Lake in Henderson, NC.  We’re expecting a nice crowd for that one, which also serves as the District III championship this year.  See the Regatta Network sites for information and registration for both events:

Fleet 65 Update

After a wildly successful Southern Comfort Classic in April, the Asheville contingent of Fleet 65 is happy to welcome Bill Woodson, who joins the fleet with his purchase of #433.  Bill has crewed on big boats before but this is his first foray into the helming a dinghy.  The Jet-14s now boast the largest fleet at the Asheville Sailing Club with 7 boats.

Farther east, the fleet boasts active Jets at Lake Norman Yacht Club, Lake Townsend, and Carolina Sailing Club.  Tim Porter (#628, #544) and Tom Grace (#717) are looking forward to hosting two events later this season at LNYC.

Classifieds

Jet-14 #1091

Jet-14 #1091 is for sale at SSA

There’s been some movement on the classifieds page recently.  Just added is Jet #1091 (“Woodstock”), a Dubdum that has been recently updated.  The boat is packaged with the SSA triple trailer for $2000, a fantastic deal.

If you’re looking for a newer Jibetech Jet, Kate Erklauer’s #1145 could be your ride. It’s got all the cool stuff, including 8 sails!

Finally, Denise from Massachusetts recently contacted me about a hull her late husband worked on for a number of years restoring.  The hull number is unknown at this time, but it is most likely a Siddons and Sindle circa late 1950s.  Check it out and call Denise if you might be interested in finishing a fine, solid wood hull.

If you have any updates or other things to post here, just send me an email.
