Getting Ready for a Great Season

The Jet-14 regatta season is underway and about to seriously heat up.  Also lots of miscellaneous news to get out there, so here we go!

Southern Comfort Classic Results
For the first time in this history of the regatta, the Michos team did not come home with the first place trophy.  Instead, Tom Grace and Paula Pacheco came in from Lake Norman Yacht Club and showed everyone that fast is fast whatever your ride looks like.  Check out the full recap by following the link.

Recent News
Jet-14 in Wooden Boat Magazine – Our esteemed Second VP Seth Parker sent along a nice little write up of the Jet-14 that recently appeared in Wooden Boat Magazine (see the image at left).  The article was about the classic International-14s and the boxed sidebar talks about the origins of the Jet.  Check out the May/June issue of Wooden Boat for the full article.

– We have a JetBlasts editor.  Her name is Paula.  She has done this before.  Send her anything from your fleets that you’d like to see in the JetBlasts.  See the website for contact information.

–  The recent T-shirt order was a huge success with over 40 high-quality shirts going out to Jetters.  I have a few extras – size Medium and X-Large that are available for $22+shipping.  Please let me know ASAP if you would like a shirt before they sell out.  The image below shows essentially what they look like, although the base color is a darker grey than how it appears here.

– There is a new Jet-14 website under development.  Believe it or not, the current site has been up in its current form since the year 2000.  Needless to say, web technology has come a long way in 15 years and we’re working to bring our site into this century.  One of the advantages to redoing to whole thing is that it can be purged/updated/organized all at once, leaving us with a much more user friendly and attractive tool for current and potential members.  Expect to be blown away by the end of the year (these things take time!).

Fast Boats Available
Several quality boats as well as reno projects are available on the website and through back door channels (class email list).  These include proven winners (Bertocci’s #1148, the “Yankee Maid” #1145, and “Charlie’s Angel” #1129) in the $4,000 – $5,000 range.  There are also 2 or 3 boats that are either free to anyone who wants to take on a project or listed for minimal cost.  See the classifieds on the website for the latest listings or contact me through email.

Of course, brand new Jet-14s are always available too!

Regatta Safety
District IV VP Matt Japikse sent along this article detailing recommendations for safety boat procedures at regattas.  This follows on the tail of discussions we had at the 2014 Nationals and the winter meeting this past February.  Check it out.

Membership
Class secretary Tiffany Parker reports we are a little bit behind last year in terms of membership.  I realize that some of this may be to the inconvenience caused by not having online payment available this year.  You can be assured that this option will return.  In the meantime, please take a few minutes and sign on for this season.  You can fill out this form and mail in with your check to Tiffany.

Upcoming Regattas
We have a full schedule coming up in the next few weeks.  I know it is hard to travel but having out of towners at these events makes it more fun for everyone and keeps the class healthy.  Please consider making it to at least one of these awesome events coming up later this month and in June.  See the schedule for contact information.

May 30-31: Silver Chevron/District III Championships – Severn Sailing Association, Annapolis, MD.  Contact Eric Johnson

June 7: Wren Regatta – Hunterdon SC, Clinton, NJ.  Contact David Veno (bonus: did you know the Wren regatta is named after the boat that won the inaugural regatta??  Double bonus – do you know what boat that is?)

June 20-21: Konigsberg Memorial, SSA, Annapolis, MD.  Contact Eric Johnson

Connections (July updates)

The Jet-14 class had a big weekend June 14-15 as 3 regattas in 3 different states with over 20 boats competing were contested.  More important than the numbers and results were the new and missed faces that we connected with.  As I was reading Fleet 61 captain Eric Johnson’s  Konigsburg report, I was pleased to see that Kate Erklauer was back on the water after taking some time off to begin her family.  Racing next to Kate was Michael Parramore, who has a much longer history and personal connection with the Jet-14 than I will ever have.  Michael has been busy racing Lasers with his daughter and supporting his wife’s equine habit (which I know a little about).  It was fantastic to hear about their weekend and I hope we see more of you very soon.

Jet-14 #203

New members Connie Berchem and Teri Fosmire (#203) round the top mark at the 2014 Governor’s Cup

At the NC Governor’s Cup down in Henderson, NC, I am happy to report that Fleet 65 has grown by another couple of boats.  Connie Berchem has teamed with Teri Fosmire to campaign #203 for the rest of the season.  Connie was a last minute crew fill in for me at the District III championships at SSA.  She has been a sail maker for over 20 years and has a knack for making a boat go fast.  Teri is the mother of Hunter Trombetta, who many of you may remember as an up and coming sailor who crewed for Fleet 65 member Lenny Wells at the Lake Norman nationals last year.  She is new to sailing and learning fast – they make a great team.  Speaking of Lenny, he has officially joined Fleet 65 as the new owner of #1130 – congratulations!  We’ll be seeing him, Connie, and Teri at Nationals this year.  We were also excited to meet Don Janeway from Chapel Hill, the new owner of #1115.  Don has a lot of racing and restoration experience and we are looking forward to seeing him out on the water in the coming months.

2014 Nationals Registration Underway

Nationals chair Dean Whalen and his cohorts at Mayfield Yacht Club have an awesome Nationals planned (August 14-16).  The Women/Junior Nationals will be contested at the same venue on August 13.  The Notice of Race, measurement form, and registration are now available here:

http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/8728

The class association is running a special promotion this year – registration is waived for first-time Nationals skippers or owners.  Contact Chairman Whalen for details – you must be a member of the class association to take advantage of this offer.

Please note that there will be a “Nationals tune up” regatta (aka the Gravy Bowl) at Hunterdon SC in Clinton NJ August 9 – why not race there on your way to Mayfield?  The Gravy Bowl is also the third leg of the 2014 Traveler’s Series. Contact Fleet 51 member Nicky Einthoven for information.
