Free Jet-14 Class Association Membership – Join Today!

The Jet-14 Board of Governors voted unanimously at their February meeting to make membership dues for the 2021 season complimentary, citing the severe disruption in sailing activities in 2020 and the ongoing challenges in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Jet-14 Class asks that all interested members, whether renewing or new, fill out a membership form with their contact information. The form can be filled out online or downloaded from the Jet-14 website and mailed in.

Despite the sailing disruption, the Jet-14 Class is optimistic that the worst is behind us and is actively putting together a regatta schedule for the 2021 season, including the traditional opening event in Asheville. The 2021 Nationals is being planned for Mayfield Yacht Club (NY) in early August, with backup sites under consideration.

Jet-14 Class Plans for Return To Racing

The COVID-19 epidemic has led to the cancellation or postponement of regattas across the world.  As of late May many states now allow sailing, especially with family.  This has sparked discussion in the Jet-14 class about the prospects of cobbling together a racing schedule for the rest of the 2020 season.

The first regatta that most of us are wondering about is Nationals, originally planned for Mayfield Yacht Club in early August.  The class association is in close contact with MYC leadership about the event.  As New York has been at the epicenter of the crisis in the United States, state and MYC leadership are understandingly pessimistic that we will be able to have Nationals as scheduled.

Given this information, the Jet-14 class association is exploring alternatives for dates and places for our national championship, in case we are not able to race at MYC.  Members and other interested sailors are advised to stay tuned for updates, as the situation is fluid.  Other regattas originally scheduled are mostly in a “wait and see” pattern.  The popular NC Governor’s Cup Regatta has been cancelled, but other regattas later in the summer have not made decisions yet.

Check back with this site as more information is released.

Wells/Kern Start 2018 Strong With Win at Southern Comfort Classic

Lenny Wells and Caswell Kern (#1130) topped a 10-boat fleet to win the 2018 Jet-14 Southern Comfort Classic near Asheville, NC last weekend.  Wells and Kern won a tiebreaker over Chris Hennon and Kevin Trebilcock (#483) with three race wins to two.  Barry Saunders and crew Rebecca Walker (#737) won the B fleet and finished 4th overall.

Eight races were run in a gusty northwesterly that saw several boats capsize throughout the weekend.  The seven boats from Asheville Sailing Club were joined by Barry and Rebecca (Carolina Sailing Club), Tim and Lucas Porter (#645, Lake Norman Yacht Club), and Tom Grace and Paula Pacheco (#717, LNYC).  A full recap and pictures can be found on the Jet-14 Class website.

The first regatta of the Jet-14 season gets underway this weekend near Asheville, NC.  Weather is forecast to be ideal with sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-upper 60s, and winds in the 5-15 kt range.  Lenny Wells (#1130) will look to defend his title against an expected fleet of 10 boats which includes past champion Tom Grace/Paula Pacheco (#717).

The local ABC affiliate, WLOS, ran a series of segments on the regatta, the local club, and the new youth sailing program.  You’ll find some nice video of last year’s SCC regatta in there.
